Prioritizing Self Care in Yoga Practice

Yoga is a neverending journey of transformation and self-discovery, and the real beauty is that there is no one-size-fits-all yoga practice. But we all can start incorporating more self-care into our daily practice. Here are five simple ways to add self-care to your yoga practice that you can do any time, any place!

Set an intention
Before starting your daily practice, take a step back and think about what it is that brought you on your yoga mat. What is it that you most want your life to be focused on today? By setting an intention you are able to make a connection between what you will work through on your mat, and what you will continue to focus on later when you step off your mat and return back to your daily tasks.

Breathe mindfully
As life begins with the first breath, every yoga practice begins with the first conscious breath. Our self-care begins when we take time to pay attention to our breath. And there is something powerful in the simple act of being aware of our breathing. Relax your body through breathing techniques and meditation.

Develop a mindfulness practice
Mindfulness is our ability of being awake and fully aware of what is going on both inside us and around us. And practicing mindfulness can help our environment too. Lately I've been using (and loving!) our new Cork Collection, which has been wonderful because its materials are gentle on the Earth, without me sacrificing grip and quality.

Listen to your heart
Be kind to yourself. Honor your own process and emotions. Simply open your heart and surrender to what is. With no expectation, and no force. Feel your feelings. Acknowledge and accept your emotions. Don't be afraid to feel pain. Give yourself permission to feel everything.

Practice gratitude
Create space and give thanks. By reminding ourselves of what we have and what we are grateful for, we come back to living from a place of love and compassion. Appreciate a moment of stillness.
